• Lab information system sends orders to specimen management system

• Caregiver uses a handheld device displaying orders

• Caregiver scans patient's wristband at bedside

• Specimen management system checks for correct patient

• Orders are displayed on handheld device specifying:

  • Test

  • Tube color to utilize

  • Time to draw

  • Order of draw

   

• Caregiver draws the patient

• Caregiver scans the tubes drawn

• Specimen management system checks for correct time, tube

• Specimen management system prints label for tube

• Caregiver applies the label to the tube at the bedside 

• Caregiver continues scanning other tubes until all are completed
